What it is
CodeFont is a Visual Studio Code extension that finds the monospace fonts already installed on your machine, checks that they work for code, and applies the one you pick to your editor or terminal — without hand-editing settings.json.
It is free, MIT-licensed, and runs entirely on your computer.
- Network requests
- 0 — the extension never phones home
- ASCII coverage
- At least 76 of the 95 printable ASCII characters
- Licence
- MIT
How it works
Changing your coding font in VS Code normally means checking whether the font is installed, guessing its exact family name, editing settings.json, and remembering that the terminal has a separate setting. CodeFont collapses that into one panel and writes the right keys for you.
A font is listed only if it passes a real check, not a metadata guess:
- it covers at least 76 of the 95 printable ASCII characters;
- letters and digits share one advance-width cluster, which is what “monospaced” actually means for code;
- icon fonts, symbol fonts, and proportional fonts are filtered out.
It also reads every face inside .ttc and .otc collections, follows symlinked font directories, caches results for 24 hours, and rescans only folders that changed.
What it does not do
- No account, telemetry, or network requests. There is nothing to sign up for, and nothing leaves your device. The source is public.
- No font downloads or sales. It works with fonts you already have installed and takes no commission.
- No font editing or theme changes. It does not modify font files, colours, or syntax highlighting.
- No ratings or testimonials. Either the behaviour described here is true when you install it, or it is not.
- No hidden configuration. It writes to the standard
editor.*andterminal.integrated.*keys through VS Code’s settings system. Settings you set later still win.
Who builds it
CodeFont is built and maintained by an independent developer. Version 0.1.0 does one narrow thing and tries to do it correctly rather than broadly.
Requirements: VS Code 1.100 or newer, on Windows, macOS, or Linux.

- github.com/maxlee/code-font-vscode (MIT)
- Marketplace
- CodeFont on the Visual Studio Marketplace
